Show Choir is #1!
The West Cary Middle School Show Choir won first place at the Music Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia this weekend. Bailey Dockery, Jordan Ferris, and Katherine Womack won soloists awards as well. Congratulations to Mrs. Winberry and her fabulous Show Choir!

Wake Tech is offering summer camps in Engineering Technology, Robotics and Electronics, Simulation and Gaming and Gaming Engines. Below is a synopsis of the camps. Attached is the brochure for the camps. To see more information go to http://atec.waketech.edu/

Hours for all ATEC Camps:
- Monday - Wednesday: 8am - 5pm Thursday: 8am - 6pm **
Parents are invited on Thursday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. to attend a presentation of the week’s work
Lunch is not provided Subway (on campus) is available or bring bag lunch
** no care or supervision is provided before or after the camp hours

Engineering Technology July 6 - 9, July 20 - 23
Rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders will work with Architecture, Civil, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering faculty in the design and construction of selected projects (such as, popsicle bridges, catapults, cross bows and solar cars) using the Architecture design studio, building timing circuits and working with educational robots.

NEW Robotics & Electronics June 8 - 11 July 13 - 16
Rising 9th and 10th graders will build and program Lego systems for various in-camp competitions, as well as build various electronic projects (such as an tunable electronic organ) using oscilloscopes and interface microcontrollers for selected projects.

Simulation and Gaming June 15 - 18
Rising 9th and 10th graders will learn to design and create digital games using GameMaker software. Using drag-and-drop software, students will create games with professional quality animation, backgrounds, music, graphics, and sound effects! Students can download Gamemaker lite for creating a game.

NEW Gaming Engines June 22 - 25
Rising 9th and 10th graders will use the UNREAL* engine. The students will use this engine in the camp to make their 3 level game. Unreal*
Engine provides the platform and tools needed to develop cutting-edge 3D
projects.

To play their games at home, the parents will have to purchase for $50 the Unreal Tournament 3 game for PC (for mature audiences due to Blood
and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language)

Geography Bee State Results
Eighth grader, Ashwin Monian, qualified to compete in the state Geography Bee, held at Wake Tech on Friday, April 3rd. Ashwin missed only one question in the first nine rounds, and narrowly missed going to the final round competition. His teachers and classmates are very proud of Ashwin's accomplishment in qualifying to compete at the state level.

Orchestra Earns Superior at Festival
West Cary 7th and 8th grade orchestra students earned a Superior at the NC Orchestra Festival. WCMS's overall score was 120/125. WCMS students also earned a perfect sightreading score of 20/20. This is their 2nd consecutive year of Superior. Congratulations to the students on this outstanding accomplishment!

Summer Outdoor Ed-Ventures for Rising 7th Grade Girls
Canoeing or kayaking, overnight camping and night walks highlight the Girls In Science summer camps. As they explore North Carolina's waterways and the rich wildlife those waterways support, the campers design a natural science activity, which they later present in their schools.
Piedmont Ed-venture
Monday, July 6 - Saturday, July 12, 2009
Location: Blue Jay Point County Park, Raleigh
Cost: $275 * (includes all lodging, meals, transportation during camp, instructional supplies, activities and t-shirt)
Located on Falls Lake in Wake County, Blue Jay Point County Park features butterfly gardens, backyard wildlife habitats, hiking trails and a modern residential facility with a full kitchen and an indoor classroom. Meals will be catered or prepared by the Museum staff and the girls. Highlights include wafting and canoeing on local rivers and lakes, an overnight camping adventure, and nocturnal nature explorations. We will also visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the Museum's Research Laboratory and the Museum's field station, Prairie Ridge Ecostation for Wildlife and Learning.
Coastal Ed-venture
Monday, August 3 - Saturday, August 9, 2009
Trinity Center, Salter Path, NC
Cost: $325* (includes all lodging, meals, transportation during camp, instructional supplies, activities and t-shirt)
Come explore the North Carolina's Crystal Coast! From our base at the Trinity Center, an ocean-side conference center located in Salter Path, we will enjoy a week of coastal edventure! Just to mention a few of our plans, we will cruise, sail, snorkel and explore with the staff of Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium, test water quality and learn about coastal ecology at the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve, and delve into our state's historical pirate tales, including the famous Blackbeard, at the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
Any North Carolina girl who will be starting seventh grade in the fall of 2008 can apply. Selection is based on demonstrated interest or ability in science and on science teacher recommendations. Early applications will be given preference.

8th Grade Student Finishes 3rd in MathCounts
Jeffrey An finished 3rd in the NC State MathCounts final Friday at the NC School of Math and Science in Durham. The top four finishers qualified for the team to represent North Carolina in the National MathCounts Competition May 7-10 in Orlando, FL.

- Spring has sprung...please ensure that your children adhere to the WCPSS dress code policy. Leggings and short, short shorts are not a part of the learning environment. Please support us in ensuring that your child follows this policy.

Parents: Just like all classes at WCMS, Enrichment is an integral part of the instructional school day. Please ensure that your child arrives to school on time each Wednesday morning. Attendance matters and counts. Thank you.

Enrichment
The West Cary Middle School Enrichment Program meets weekly on Wednesday during the school day. The purpose of the program is to teach students how to use higher level thinking skills. Teachers work with students in different subject areas to improve student achievement. Students are provided with many opportunities to experience different subjects they would not see during a normal school day. Students are also provided with extra assistance in areas of need. The program is run on a one hour delay schedule.
